Fighting on two fronts: Army secretary’s exit highlights Hegseth’s war on pushback

By Anna Mulrine Grobe, Staff writer, September 3, 2026, 2:56 p.m. ET

War requires discipline and problem-solving. Dan Driscoll’s resignation as Army secretary highlights a pattern of moves by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth – at a time of conflict – that appears to prioritize political loyalty over expertise.

We are looking forward to this expression of church that propels us towards prayer.

Parents in prison: New ways to sustain family bonds

By the Monitor's Editorial Board, July 29, 2026, 3:55 p.m. ET

The increasing incarceration of women – often for minor, nonviolent offenses – carries a high human cost. There is a shift toward alternatives that balance accountability with the right of children to continued parental care.

‘Desperate men in desperate times’: Reporting on Russia’s failed August coup of 1991

Three Days That Shook the World

By Clayton Collins, Director of Innovation, Mackenzie Farkus, Associate Multimedia Producer

August 14, 2026, 12:00 p.m.

Daniel Sneider was the Monitor’s Moscow bureau chief 35 years ago this month when Kremlin hard-liners grabbed Mikhail Gorbachev at a dacha in Crimea, in a short-lived coup attempt. In this special episode, we surface some newly unearthed archival Monitor Radio audio and talk with Dan about what Monitor multimedia reporting looked like (and sounded like) in 1991, about what the story of that era presaged, and about the qualities of Monitor journalism that Dan still holds dear. Clay Collins hosts.

FCC considers cuts to funds for internet access at schools and libraries

By Aaron Glantz, Staff writer, Aug. 20, 2026, 5:44 p.m. ET

WHY WE WROTE THIS

A program called E-Rate has helped expand public internet access for 30 years. As the Federal Communications Commission challenges whether the subsidies are still needed, schools and libraries say cuts could leave them with hard choices.
