CHURCH FOUNDATION

We are a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, which was formed in early 1879 “…to commemorate the words and works of our Master [Christ Jesus], which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.” (Church Manual, p 17.)

Here are the six tenets of Christian Science.

In 1895, Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, ordained a universal Pastor for the church - the Holy Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Readings from these books comprise our weekly Bible Lesson sermons.

We aspire to demonstrate Eddy’s spiritual definition of…:

“CHURCH. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick.”

WHAT WE’RE ABOUT

Christian Scientists are guided by “A Rule for Motives and Acts”: Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. (Church Manual, p. 40)

Through individual and structured study of the Pastor, in which we learn to heal through Christ; a weekly fellowship of shared inspiration and experiences of healing; inspiration from our periodicals, and familial care of one another, we nurture in our membership a continued commemoration of Jesus’ words and works. Like his works, and those of the prophets before him, ours also point in every practical way to an ever-present “heaven” - a spiritual relationship with God— described in the Bible as Truth, Life, and Love— that includes our fellow man and the universe.

As Jesus said (Luke 17:21): “…behold, the kingdom of God (‘heaven”) is within you.”

Our experiences resulting from daily prayer and practice demonstrate that “God with us” and lead us out of limited, downward-trending materialism.

We deeply appreciate what Christ Jesus showed us, by example, and take to heart his words from John (14): “…He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

As a church, we’re all about helping each other and our community learn how to express more Christly qualities in our own lives. Healing for the world starts with healing for ourselves and our neighbors.
